Why did the proposition regarding same marriage fail in California?

Rather ironic that California and Florida voters went with Obama but voted against all 3 gay marriage proposistions on the ballots. And blacks and hispanics by far voted against gay marriage. What that tells me is that we are still a center right country with morals and values that far out weigh the will of a small vocal minority such as gays.
