Joseph K s name from the Kafka's Trial?

In Franz Kafka's The Trial the protagonist is simply refered to as Joseph K. Why does Kafka not give this character a last name? It must be symbolic. Thanks so much! trying to put an essay together and this seems like an interesting sunbject!
