Loads of dry mud has just been walked through on my new carpet,no working Hoover,what can I do?

You could definitely ask a neighbour - after all, I'm sure they would have been bothered by the kids too. Don't spray it with anything - then it would be wet and be even worse. Can you improvise - how about a hairbrush and a piece of cardboard to make a "dustpan and brush". !!!
